Goodbye May...

Last night at approximately 1:30 am May Day passed on to greener pastures.  It is with a heavy heart I tell you the story of May, a horse that has touched my heart in ways that I will never understand.

May and a herd of 18 thoroughbreds were living on a farm in New Jersey being starved to death.  It has been said the owner of the farm threw out one bale of hay a week for the 18 horses who were slowly dying.  After years of starvation they were all emaciated and starting to eat dirt and fences to stay alive.  The man finally surrendered the herd to a group of people who vowed to help them.  I won't say their names because I am unsure if they still want to stay anonymous.  By this time three of the horses had passed away from starvation so the herd was down to 15 horses.  They had been out with a stallion so pregnancies were defiantly a possibility.  Project Sage got an e-mail with some pictures of the horses and I decide to go take a look.  Myself, our shipper Ray, and Kim who provides our quarantine and rehab decided we would help two of these horses.

When I got to the location they were being kept at I had to hold back my tears.  Starving horses are not something that you see everyday.  You could see more ribs, back bones, and hip bones then you would see at a horse auction.  I walked through the pen and spotted her.  She was one of the skinniest horse there but wandered over to me and put her head into my arms.  I decided she would be one of the mares we would help.  I scratched her ears and kissed her velvet nose.  I told my friend who had gone with me I would name her May Day, a name that was suggested by one of my blog readers.  It fit her perfectly and I vowed to do everything I could to help her.  It was suggested she was 16 which I posted with my original pictures.

Along with May we picked out a 2 year old TB filly and a 12 year old TB mare.  So much for taking just two.  We loaded them up onto Ray's trailer and they headed to Kim's to fill their bellies and begin their rehab.

Yesterday morning around 8:30 am Kim called and told me May was down.  We called the vet out and it was determined May was between 25-30 years old and had a severe heart murmur and large growths in her birthing canal.  The vet determined she had probably given birth within the last year and was also most likely suffering from EPM, a neurological disease.  The list of problems May had was a page long.  Kim stayed with her all day, covering her with blankets and warm bottles to keep her warm.  Everything that could have been done for May was.  She did not have the strength  to stand on her own but we kept fighting for her giving her every chance possible.

I went to bed last night and prayed for May.  I prayed god would give her a chance for me to love her and to give her treats.  My phone rang at 1:15 am and I was told May was giving up.  She was now in pain and it was time to help her cross the rainbow bridge.  May was humanely laid to rest at 1:30 am.

Rest in Peace May Day.  You have touched many people and I'm glad you were able to go with your dignity.  We will forever love you sweet girl.

May's vet bill for the day ended up to be close to $800.00.  Any help with this is greatly appreciated.  Checks can be sent in honor of May to:

It's down to the last few hours...We are heading to New Holland Horse Auction TOMORROW!...make a donation now to help us save a life tomorrow!  Our paypal is still down (I'm working on it, I promise!!) so send a donation to donnakye@hotmail.com and make it for Project Sage!!  You can also send a check to
Project Sage Horse Rescue Inc

Valley Stream, NY, 11580

We are hoping to rescue 4-5 more horses so please consider helping out!  I promise you will sleep better at night knowing you helped a horse!

The three new mares are doing REALLY well!  They are gaining weight and seem very happy to have hay in front of them!!  They could really use blankets, if anyone has a 76-80 laying around please consider donating one to May, Glory, and Kenzie.

We attended Camelot Horse Auction on Wednesday night and we were able to rescue a pregnant pony mare.  She is due in ONE MONTH!!!  Which means I'm having another contest!!  Let's name this baby!  Send in your name suggestions with a $1.00 donation to help Charlotte name her baby either to paypal (donnakye@hotmail.com) or to our snail mail address (listed above!).  We can really use donations to help pay for her vet bills to get her baby into this world safely.  Please consider helping her out!!

We were also able to rescue a mini who is now named Dually.  He thinks he's about 17 hh tall!  Both these horses are now in QT.  We were also able to rescue two goats now named Bert and Ernie.  They will be living at our farm and enjoying life instead of ending up on someones dinner plate.  Stop by and visit our new goats!  They are still scared but they are coming around.

Need to take a moment to thank Ray for shipping our new TB mares and for also shipping our Camelot rescues and helping me with my goats!!  Also need to thank Kim for taking such good care of all of our rescue horses while they are in QT.

Wish us luck tomorrow as we head to PA tomorrow around 4 am!  I will update everyone tomorrow on my facebook (Brittany - Project Sage) and will update my blog ASAP!  Thank you to everyone who has donated.

Please check out the horses for adoption and spread the word about them!  They would love to find homes for the spring!!

Giving hope...

Today we headed out to help some TB mares that needed to be rescued.  We can't disclose a lot of information about these mares but they were rescued from horrible conditions where they were starving to death.  Thank you to the many amazing people who were involved in helping these mares.  They DID NOT run through an auction.  They have stickers on just for identification purposes only.  We need help with these horses to help cover their extensive rehabilitation.  It's going to be a long haul for these poor mares but we are hopeful that they will make a full recovery!  Our paypal is STILL down but if you would like to make a donation you can pay pal to donnakye@hotmail.com or mail a check made out to Project Sage Horse Rescue to 63 S. Waldinger St. Valley Stream, NY, 11580.  Please consider helping these three horses in their recovery.

Cookbooks for a Cause!

One of our supporters is selling horse treat cookbooks to raise money for Project Sage! The cookbooks are $5.00 each and have some tasty horse treat recipes in them! Please paypal your $5.00 to donnakye@hotmail.com with your full name and address in the "notes" section! These cookbooks make great gifts or just get one for yourself!  All of the cookbook money will be going to rescue horses from New Holland!

We still need to raise $2670.00 to get to New Holland on the 21st of this month!  If you would like to make  donation please paypal it is donnakye@hotmail.com.  We can't go unless we raise all of this money so PLEASE chip in!  Every dollar counts!

Another one of our supporters is running a flower fundraiser for Project Sage so check out http://www.flowerpowerfundraising.com/campaign?campaign_id=4736 and order some flowers!!  Project Sage gets 50% of all profits made from this fundraiser.  They are VERY fairly priced and are very pretty!!!  They even sell strawberries that you can grow!  I know I will be ordering those.

I thank everyone who has taken the time to plan a fundraiser for Project Sage.  Will you be the next person to step up to the plate and plan a fundraiser for us?  It could be online just like the flowers or cookbooks or something different!  Be creative, you can do anything to change the life of a horse forever.

Let's Play the Name Game!

We are going to New Holland in exactly 2 weeks!  We need to raise $3000.00 to cover all costs of going to the auction!  Our goal is to rescue 4-5 more horses from a horrible fate.  We are going to try the name game again! Every person that sends in a $5 donation gets to also send in 1 name in the notes box on paypal. I will choose one (or more) of these names for our newest group of rescue horses from NH! Since our paypal is still down you can pay pal your donations to donnakye@hotmail.com and mark that it is for Project Sage!  Thank you Donna for letting us use her pay pal until ours is back up and running!!!  Donna is making the trip to New Holland with us this time after sponsoring 2 horses for our last two trips.  This time she is sponsoring a horse and coming to the auction!

Our hope is in the next two weeks we can raise enough money to help another group of amazing horses from New Holland.  Again we are looking for sponsors to help us help the horses!  You can half sponsor a horse for $250.00 or fully sponsor a horse for $500.  Remember the horses need YOUR help!  Make a life saving donation now!  If you would like to donate to our next New Holland trip send your donation either to our mailing address or to the paypal account donnakye@hotmail.com.  Our paypal is down right now so Donna has been kind enough to let us use hers!

Thank you advance to everyone who helps us out with our next journey to New Holland.

The snow is melting!!!

Happy to report the snow at our farm is MELTING!!!  Maybe spring is around the corner?! Well, I'm hoping it is so we can get many of our rescue horses back in training!  Today they are all outside enjoying the warmth (44 degrees!) and are running free without their blankets on for the first time in weeks!

Ruby Slippers is back at the rescue to recover from a nasal discharge.  We are hoping she will be all better by the spring and will make someone a wonderful horse.  She is not available at this time due to her runny nose so she is just enjoying munching on hay and hanging out.  Ruby has wracked up quite a vet bill this past week and we could sure use help paying it off!  If you would like to make a donation to Ruby's vet care please call our vets office at 516-496-7727.  Tell them you are making a donation to Project Sage Horse Rescue, they will take a credit card right over the phone!  If you are making a donation please send me an e-mail so I can keep track!  Thank you so much!  Every penny helps pay of our vet bill for Ruby.  The vets office is open Mon-Fri from 9-5.  I thank everyone in advance for considering helping Ruby in her recovery.

Just want to take a moment to says congrats to Erika on her adoption of Luna, Sheri on her adoption of Sophie, Gaile on her adoption of Sugar, and Joeyheather on her adoption of Luther.  Best of luck to all of you and best of luck to these four amazing horses.

George and Remmy are both coming back to the farm next Sunday!  Thank you SOOO much to Gaile for bringing them to us!  It saves me and Marion a LONG drive to PA!

We have decided to head back to New Holland on Feb 21st to rescue a few more needy horses.  Unfortunatly our paypal is down right now but we are accepting donations via snail mail to
Project Sage Horse Rescue

Valley Stream, NY, 11580

Now I'm going to PLEAD with everyone who reads this to please help us with our Chinese Auction.  We are having our dinner dance on May 21st at our farm!  We are so excited and are in the planning process.  The biggest part of our dinners is the amazing Chinese Auction.  Basically we need help gathering brand new items and gift cards to put into baskets for the auction.  ANYTHING we will take, if you know anyone with a store please ask them for a gift card.  We are also asking anyone with a vacation home to consider donating a weekend stay for the auction.  Anyone with season tickets to sports games, anything signed by sports stars.  Basically anything!  So please help us brainstorm to make this the best auction EVER for Project Sage.  We have already got some great items but we need tons more!  If you have anything to donate please e-mail me at projectsagehorserescue@gmail.com

We are also looking for sponsors for this event also, please e-mail me if you are interested in sponsoring the event!  We are also looking for items for our goodies bags so if you own a company and would like to put a promotional item in the goodie bag contact me (ie pens, magnets, calenders, samples).  This is a great way to get the name of your business out there!!!

Last but not least Project Sage is in need of wormers, himaylian salt licks, and corn oil!!!  If you would like donate anything of this it can be either mailed to our mailing address or dropped off at the farm!!

Hope everyone is enjoying this warm day!!!!
