A Second Take for Rescue Horses

In 1978 he defeated Seattle Slew and Affirmed in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. A savage pace led to an epic performance as Exceller, 22 lengths behind, rallied to beat Seattle Slew by a nose.   In 1978 he won 7 stakes races, including the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Hollywood Gold Cup and Sunset Handicap.  In 1997, he was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame.   That very same year Exceller died in a foreign slaughterhouse.  It is said that he had no health or fertility problems to speak of.  Instead, it was his owner’s bankruptcy that ended his life.  With many years of life left to give, this famous thoroughbred was discarded amongst many.  Every year, tens of thousands of equines in the United States are sent to slaughter.  Auction houses across the country parade these horses through to their death every day.  Battling these statistics are equine rescues like Project Sage Horse Rescue of Northport, NY.  Started in 2007, by then-16 year-old Brittany Rostron, the rescue has saved over ninety horses to date.  Without efforts from local rescues, these horses are sold for as little as fifteen dollars only to be inhumanely transported and slaughtered, their meat being shipped for human consumption to countries like France and Japan.
Anyone who has adopted a slaughter bound horse knows that these are not all old and broken mounts.  According to 2001 field studies conducted by Temple Grandin, 70% of all horses at the slaughter plant were in good, fat, or obese condition; 72% were considered to be “sound” of limb; 84% were of average age; and 96% had no behavioral issues.   These are riding horses, children’s ponies, camp mounts and racehorses.  Luckily, Project Sage knows just how amazing these discarded horses can be.  Starting in summer of 2011, in conjunction with Two Cousins’ Farm in Northport, NY, rescued equines can have a new light on life.  Two Cousins’ Farm will be featuring a day camp using solely slaughter bound horses in its riding program.  Program Director Lauren Thomas has created a unique summer program aimed at creating well balanced riders with compassion for their mounts using Humane Education.  This type of learning teaches compassion, empathy and respect for animals as well as people and is becoming a growing field in schools.  What better way of teaching children the fundamentals of good character than with one of their all-time favorite topics: animals? When it comes to teaching core skills and core values, humane-themed lessons can capture a child’s attention, imagination, and heart in ways that other subject matter may not. With Humane Education as a part of the curriculum, campers will learn more than grooming and games.  It allows children to become better aware of the world around them and the impacts of their choices on themselves, other people, animals and the earth.  Campers will enjoy a full day of horsey activities with an emphasis on riding, horse care, and how it relates to Humane Education.  With weekly speakers from different types of animal rescues and equine experts, every week at Two Cousins’ camp will offer unique learning opportunities.  All curriculums are provided by the ASPCA.
At the close of the camp season, all of the rescued horses will be adopted out to their forever homes, while proceeds from the camp will help Project Sage continue its work throughout the year.   Horses like Exceller deserve a better ending.  Today’s youth could be that better ending.   Humane education can provide them the knowledge and tools to put these values into action in meaningful, far-reaching ways.  What better way to do this than a partnership with a rescued equine.

Updates!

Hi Everyone!  Just want to give everyone an update of whats going on at the farm.  We are having some extreme web site issues so nothing will be changing for a few days except my blog!  Justice got adopted, congrats to Kelley on family on adopting him!  I will miss that sweet boy!

Quincy was adopted by Donna and family.  He is now being boarded at our farm and is doing very well!  Dually, the white mini, was brought down to the farm over the weekend and is doing very well!

We also rescued a grulla mare, whom I now call Daisy.  Her owner was selling her directly to slaughter, not even letting her go through the auction.  Project Sage stepped in and rescued her and she now has a second chance!  We were also able to rescue three other horses with Daisy that are in rehab and I will have pictures and information on soon.  All of them were to be sold to a well known kill buyer.  They did not even give them a chance to be run through auction.  Some people baffle me!!!  But on the bright side they are now safe with us and will soon be ready for their forever homes.  Quick information on the horses...we rescued a mare and foal now named Holly and Stella and a paint gelding now named Shamrock!  I will share pictures with everyone soon!  They are in PA right now getting the love and attention they so badly need!

Back to Daisy!  We were able to bring her back to our farm this past weekend to get her started on her training.  She does need some weight but is doing very well!  We rode her today for the first time and she went around like a gem!  What a sweet horse.  I will post some pictures on my blog once I have a moment to upload them.

We also rescued a 26 year old TB gelding, named Legend.  His owner needed to place him ASAP due to a back board situation or he would be sent to auction. We quickly stepped in and raised funds to bail him and get him to PA.  He is with Kim right now being rehabbed but we hope to bring him to Long Island within the next few months!

Everyone please check out dreambigforhorses.com and order a horse hair bracelet!  Proceeds donated to Project Sage!!!!

Also our dinner dance is May 21st!!!! KEEP THIS DATE OPEN!!!!!!!! E-mail me if you would like an invitation mailed to your house!!!!

Another loss for Project Sage

On Thursday we had another terrible loss.  Kenzie, a 3 year old TB filly, passed away due to complications of being starved for years.  We are devastated that Kenzie was too far gone for us to be able to help her but are glad we were able to give her love in her last few weeks on this earth.  I pray the person who starved her to death gets punished for his horrible crime.  We are all still in the grieving process after losing two of the three thoroughbred mares so close together.  We are really pulling for Glory and are hoping she stays on the road to recovery.  Kenzie left us with a large vet bill to pay off totaling $1740.00.  We have raised some of the money but we still need a little over $1000.00 to pay off her vet bill.  Please help Kenzie rest in peace by donating in her memory.  She fought very hard her last few days of life and did not deserve what happened to her.  It truly pains me to see how people treat their animals.  Ray said he is ashamed to be part of the human race after he watched Kenzie take her last breath of air.  I agree with him at this moment in time as I grieve the loss of another horse.  Only 3 years old and Kenzie is gone from this world.  She should have passed away at a ripe old age with a belly full off apples and years of understanding that people love her.  I am glad we were able to comfort her and let her know she was loved and will always be loved by the Project Sage family.  May angels lead you in Kenzie.  Please give Sage a kiss on his velvet nose as you cross over the rainbow bridge.

Donations in Kenzie's honor can be made via pay pal to projectsagehorserescue@gmail.com or can be sent to:

Grant gets a home!!!

Just want to take a moment to say congrats to Ray (the best shipper in the world) on his adoption of Grant.  Grant was the special belgian we rescued from New Holland a few weeks ago.  Grant will get to have the best life in the world and hang out with other drafts just like him!  Good luck Grant, you are a special guy.

We have some amazing horses in the rescue right now so now is the time to adopt!!!

We found out today Izzy is actually a gaited Rocky Mountain Horse!!!  She is AWESOME!  Anyone can ride this horse.  She is sweet and has a nice w/t/c.  She has really proved herself to be an awesome horse.

We also got to ride Justice today and he was also awesome.  Melissa rode him for me and he did a VERY nice w/t/c and he even jumped a few cross rails with ease.  Talking about a nice horse!  All of these horses are proving to be incredible.  Usually we make "training plans" for our rescue horses.  They are put on a weekly schedule of days to get ridden. Today Melissa and I stood in the aisle of the barn and were talking about how amazing all the horses are and they don't need much training!  This has not happened since I met Melissa.  I always have something for her to work with and put some training into!  I'm sure she's happy she can get on anything in the barn and they are all easy going!

I have about 5 horses available right now that are not listed.  I have a great web designer who updates this site for me but she has been sick so has been unable to list the new horses for me.  Feel better Angela!!

We are in the process of planning for our dinner on May 21st and we STILL need you help collecting items for our Chinese Auction.  Any new items and gift certificates!  Please ask your local merchants and get some cool items for us to raffle off at our fundraiser.  We are hoping to make this our best dinner yet!  Tickets will be available soon!!!  We hope a lot of our out of state supporters will be able to make this trip to see our farm and come to the fundraiser!  Yes, the fundraiser will be held at the gorgeous Ketcham Farm!

It's a bit chilly tonight, all of our horses are snug in their blankets!  Have a good night everyone!
